Arthur E. and Margaret D. Gravatt Endowment

Arthur Gravatt was born in 1923 in Elma, Wash., where a $75 Rotary scholarship got him started in college. World War II interrupted his efforts, but he ultimately earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Margaret was born in Edmonton, Canada, in 1920. After completing her medical degree, she moved to Salem and opened a pediatric practice. Arthur was teaching sociology at Willamette University at that time. They met and were married. He later completed his Ph.D. Both retired from Oregon State University, Arthur in the Department of Health and Human Services and Margaret in Student Health Services. Arthur passed away in 2000.

Their belief in education and the important role of community colleges led to the establishment of the Arthur E. and Margaret D. Gravatt endowment, dedicated to supporting Clackamas Community College nursing students.

Impact

As a student returning for a second degree and having been financially independent for many years, the decision to quit work and return to school to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse was a difficult one but you have helped relieve some of the financial pressures. ~ Sarah
