Service to Community Scholarship
Purpose: In the spirit of Gwen Dickson, this scholarship provides tuition support to a CCC student with a strong academic background who will provide leadership in community service projects. Gwen Dickson received her Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1940. She was a lieutenant in the Navy during World War II. In 1945, she became Chief of the Educational Counseling Division of the U.S. Veteran’s Administration, where she was among the pioneers who developed the testing, counseling, and job placement services to accommodate returning soliders from World War II. In 1962 she took up John Kennedy’s call to service by joining the newly created Peace Corps as a psychologist involved in volunteer selection. She continued her work for the cause of world peace through the World Affairs Council, United Nations Association, American Friends Service Committee, and other local organizations. Throughout her life she instilled in her children and those around her the spirit of giving back to the community in order to maker our world a better place to live.
Requirements:
Applicants must:
- Have and maintain a 2.5 GPA
- Take 9 or more credits each term
- Be involved in community, school, or family service activities
